New Karibu restaurant brings London-style brunch and “inclusive cuisine” to iconic Utrecht monument

On December 1, Karibu will open the doors of its new location in the iconic Hooghiemstra building, in the heart of Utrecht. Beautiful elements of the original architecture have been restored, while natural materials and living greenery create Karibu’s signature playful and welcoming atmosphere.

Elevating the popular all-day breakfast concept from its previous Oudenoord location, the new Karibu restaurant will serve a wanderlust-inspired brunch seven days a week. Open into the evening from Wednesday through Saturday, the restaurant will become a place to enjoy an aperitif or share a fresh, nourishing dinner with friends.

“Our not-so-secret mission is to get you as excited about good food as we are. We hope our soulful take on comfort food will make you feel immediately at home, while taking your taste buds on a surprising adventure,” says Karibu owner Yentl Duijn.

WIN THE GOLDEN TICKET
From now until November 14, each Karibu takeaway order will be delivered with a fortune cookie hiding a special offer — and the chance to win an indulgent all-inclusive dinner for two at the new restaurant. While the cafe at Oudenoord has now closed its doors in accordance with national Covid-19 safety measures, the new Karibu restaurant is still scheduled to open on December 1. Curious diners can already make their reservations for December on the Karibu website.

BOLDER, CLEANER FLAVORS
Claudia Straforini joins the restaurant as Executive Head Chef, bringing extensive experience from the vibrant London food scene along with her flavor-centric Mediterranean sensibility. “Everything you eat at Karibu is homemade from scratch. It’s our act of rebellion and love in this era of mass-produced fast food. We choose only the freshest, most vibrant seasonal ingredients mother nature has to offer, and treat them with utmost respect,” says Straforini.

INCLUSIVE CUISINE
While a global boom in the number of vegetarian and vegan-friendly restaurants in the last decade shows a clear shift towards more mindful consumption, many European restaurants still largely base their menus around meat and fish dishes. Karibu turns this approach upside-down, offering mostly vegetarian and vegan dishes with the occasional responsibly-sourced meat or fish as an exception. “Whether you eat veggie, plant-based, or gluten-free — there’s no second-class lifestyle or diet! We want people from all walks of life to be able to enjoy a truly delicious meal at Karibu.”

SHARED DINING
In times like these, connection has never been more important. Crafted around the tradition of eating together, Karibu’s dishes are meant to be shared — which is why the restaurant will be taking every precaution possible to keep its service safe and its customers healthy. Reservations for December are open now.
